Trick-or-Treat Trail provides safe Halloween alternative for the kids

3b48397tChildren in sixth grade or younger are once again invited to a special, safe, trick or treat evening at Black Hawk College – East Campus south of Kewanee from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. Employees at BHC will dress in costumes, decorate the college hallways, and hand out treats. Costumes are optional for the children. Last year, approximately 900 children attended the event.

Kids and their parents should check in at the front entrance of the main building at East Campus. Directions will be given to the kids for their trick-or-treat evening.

Kewanee man was killed Sunday night when the vehicle in which he was riding struck a train in Rock Island County.

Gary Schwager, 41, was thrown from the sport utility vehicle, according to the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene, near Hillsdale.

Sgt. Schuyler Patch, who was killed in Afghanistan on Feb. 24, has been honored in his hometown with a street named after him.

His sister, Amber Patch-Troxell of Kewanee, unveiled the street sign that was named in honor of her brother. Patch was killed in action Feb. 24 by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the Illinois National Guard’s Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry, based in Kewanee. The unveiling occurred in Kewanee on Saturday.
